Merlot

Merlot is a red grape variety of French origin, recognized for its adaptability and softness. In the DOP Alicante, although Monastrell is the emblematic variety, Merlot has found a significant place, especially in the cooler areas of the province. This grape is cultivated in various Alicante localities, from the dry interior of Monóvar and Villena to the coastal areas of Xaló and Teulada, contributing to the diversity of local wines. For the wine tourist, exploring Merlot-based wines in Alicante is an enriching experience, as it offers a contrast to the typical expressions of Monastrell, revealing the versatility of the Alicante terroir.

Merlot originated in the Bordeaux region of France and has been widely cultivated around the world since its introduction in the 20th century. In the Comunitat Valenciana, its presence is relatively recent, though it has been gaining ground in Alicante vineyards, having adapted to the local climatic and soil conditions. Its cultivation in Alicante is part of a broader trend towards the diversification of foreign varieties, which complement and enrich the wine production of the region.

Regarding the vegetative cycle, Merlot buds in late spring and has a relatively early ripening cycle, making it appealing in warm climates like that of Alicante. Its moderate resistance to drought and heat requires vintners to implement water management practices, but it generally adapts well to the local Mediterranean conditions, taking advantage of the temperature variations between day and night to achieve optimal grape ripening.
