Forcallat
Description
La Forcallat, also known as Forcayat or Forcallat Tinta, is an indigenous red grape variety from the interior of the Valencian Community, traditionally cultivated in the southeastern region of Spain. Highly associated with the dry farming viticulture of the area, it is part of the rich heritage of local grapes that is currently being revived.<\/p>
It produces light, fresh, and easy-drinking red wines, with a moderate color and low astringency, reflecting the Mediterranean character of its land.<\/p>
History
La Forcallat has been present for generations in the vineyards of inland Valencia and Alicante, where it was a widely spread variety due to its hardiness and good production. Over time, it lost ground to more commercial grapes, but in recent years some wineries have revived it as part of the appreciation of traditional varieties in the region.<\/p>
Characteristics
It is a vigorous and productive vine, well adapted to the dry and hot climate and the poor soils of the Mediterranean dry land. Its wines typically have a moderate alcohol content, balanced acidity, a not very intense color, and soft tannins, making them approachable and easy to drink.<\/p>
Aromas
On the nose, it offers a fruity and fresh profile, with notes of red fruit, plum, and a slightly spicy background with hints of Mediterranean underbrush.<\/p>
Growing cycle
This variety has a medium budding and somewhat late ripening cycle and is drought-resistant. It adapts well to the warm and dry conditions of inland Alicante and Valencia, where it reaches maturity without difficulty.<\/p>
