Villena and Alto Vinalopó Wine Route
In the northwest of the province, where Alicante becomes a plateau, Villena and Cañada guard a millenary winemaking tradition under the shadow of its imposing castle. We are in Alto Vinalopó, a land of high vineyards —many above 600 meters— where Monastrell coexists with varieties such as Cabernet, Syrah, and Petit Verdot to produce full-bodied, fresh, and characterful reds.<\/p>
The route brings together some of the most interesting wineries in the interior: the historic cooperative Bodega las Virtudes, the organic estate of Francisco Gómez, Casa Balaguer, Sierra Salinas, and Finca Lagunilla in Villena; and in the neighboring Cañada, the Cooperative of Cañada and the unique Collection of Centenary Barrels.<\/p>
The main attraction is the combination of wine and heritage: the Castle of La Atalaya, the Treasure of Villena —one of the most important sets of Bronze Age goldsmithing in Europe— and a historic center that is worth a full day.<\/p>
