One-Day Escape from Alicante to the Wineries of Monóvar and Pinoso

Less than an hour from Alicante and the coast, the interior of Vinalopó offers the perfect getaway: Monastrell vineyards, centenary wineries, and the birthplace of Fondillón. Here’s how to make the most of a day between Monóvar and Pinoso.

Why Monóvar and Pinoso

These two towns in the Medio and Alto Vinalopó area are home to some of the oldest wineries in the province. This is the land of Monastrell, the king grape of Alicante, and the origin of Fondillón, the oxidative aged sweet wine that made the region famous in European courts. They are just 40-60 minutes by car from the city of Alicante.

Morning in Monóvar

Start the day in Monóvar, the birthplace of historic estates like Primitivo Quiles, a reference for Fondillón, and Bodegas Monóvar. This is the ideal time for a guided tour and an initial tasting when your palate is fresh. Also, take a stroll through the old town and visit the house-museum of writer Azorín.

Eat like the Locals

The cuisine of this area is rustic and hearty: gachamiga, rice with rabbit and snails, cured meats, and the typical sweet. Any of these pair wonderfully with a young red Monastrell.

Afternoon in Pinoso

In the afternoon, head up to Pinoso, a land of cooperatives and high vineyards. Wineries like Bodega Rafael Cañizares or Bodegas Volver showcase the modern face of Monastrell. Before you leave, don’t forget to take a bottle home.
